This flag lot is over 14,000 sq ft. and has not been covered by lava. Most of the well-populated Kalapana Gardens subdivision of the 1960s was destroyed in 1990 by a lava flow, but not this property. Lava flowed around this special area, leaving the native vegetation untouched. With mature subtropical trees, including Ohia and Noni, this lot a unique oasis for a home! Prevailing trade winds in this part of the island provide soothing breezes for a comfortable Hawaiian experience, with little exposure to VOG/volcanic dust and gasses. And without the high humidity and lush tropical vegetation characteristic of the area between Hilo and Pahoa, invasive coqui treefrogs have not become a nighttime nuisance here. The shrill voices of these tiny frogs have ruined much of the island’s tranquility.

The buildable, level lot is off grid. Check with Hawaii County for information on obtaining a permit. The driveway entrance (approximately 12 foot wide) to the main part of the flag lot has a gate installed to keep out unwanted trespassers. This is located close to the scenic Red Road coastline; it's approximately a 7-min drive to Kaimu Beach Park; a 12-min drive to Kehena Black Sand Beach; a short drive to both MacKenzie State Recreation Area and Pohoiki Bay & Hot Spring (Isaac Hale Beach Park); and less than 30 minutes to Pahoa town, which has a new shopping center, grocery stores, restaurants, shops, churches, schools and a post office.
